Fossils  to Fuel for Elementary Students

This hands-on, six-week curriculum makes it fun for students in grades three through six to learn basic concepts about how energy is transformed from the sun, to carbon-based matter, to petroleum and ultimately into our homes and schools.

Each class that completes the Fossils to Fuel curriculum will receive a free field trip from the OERB to one of five participating museums. Students will see an exciting energy exhibit sponsored by the OERB and be treated to a free energy class at the museum.

Developed by Oklahoma elementary and middle school educators, university specialists, geologists and OERB representatives, Fossils to Fuel is endorsed by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and meets the state PASS objectives. The curriculum provides everything a teacher needs, including a free teacher's guide and activity kit.

To acquire the Fossils to Fuel curriculum, teachers must attend a day-long workshop. The workshops are free, and the OERB reimburses school districts for substitute pay. If a workshop is held on a Saturday or non-school day, the OERB pays a $50 stipend for attending. Find information on workshops in your area.

How oil is formed from the remains of ocean plants and animals.

Cycle 3: It's a Gas

How natural gas is formed over millions of years from decayed ocean plants and animals.

Cycle 4: Let's Get Physical with Oil

The physical properties of oil.

Cycle 5: Seeping Stones

The porosity of rocks.

Cycle 6: Let's Rock

How seismologists use sound waves to locate rock formations that may contain oil and natural gas.

Cycle 7: Weighty Problems

How we drill for oil and natural gas.
